The impact of nonlinearity on degenerate parametric amplifiers

چکیده
This work investigates the effects of system nonlinearities on degenerate parametric amplifiers. A simple, Duffing-type nonlinearity is appended to a representative equation of motion for a mechanical or electromechanical parametric amplifier, and classical perturbation methods are used to characterize the resulting effects on the amplifier’s frequency response and performance. Ultimately, the work demonstrates that parametric amplification can be realized in nonlinear, dynamic-range limited systems, such as resonant microor nanosystems, but at the expense of performance degradation. Additionally, it is shown that nonlinear amplifiers can be operated above their linear instability threshold but that doing so results in bistable amplified responses. © 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3446851

Raman-noise induced quantum limits for χ nondegenerate phase-sensitive amplification and quadrature squeezing
We present a quantum theory of nondegenerate phase-sensitive parametric amplification in a χ nonlinear medium. The non-zero response time of the Kerr (χ) nonlinearity determines the quantum-limited noise figure of χ parametric amplification, as well as the limit on quadrature squeezing. This non-zero response time of the nonlinearity requires coupling of the parametric process to a molecular-vi...
متن کاملImpact of Input Pump Profile on the Gain Spectrum and the Saturation Behavior of One-Pump Fiber Optical Parametric Amplifiers
In this article, the impact of input pump profile on the gain spectrum as well as the saturation behavior of one-pump fiber optical parametric amplifiers (FOPAs) is investigated. Since in practical circumstances, pump sources used for FOPAs have Lorentz-Gaussian profile instead of Gaussian, a more realistic case is considered for simulating FOPAs in this article. The results of simulations for ...
متن کاملImpact of Fourth-Order Dispersion Coefficient on the Gain Spectrum and the Saturation Behavior of One-Pump Fiber Optical Parametric Amplifiers
In this paper, the gain spectrum and the saturation behavior of one-pump fiber optical parametric amplifiers (1-P FOPAs) are investigated by taking into account the fourth-order dispersion coefficient b4 in the analysis. The results show that it is necessary to consider b4 in the analysis when the wavelength difference between the signal and pump waves is large enough and/or whenever the pump w...
متن کاملThe Effects of Nonlinearity on Parametric Amplifiers
Mechanical and electromechanical parametric amplifiers have garnered significant interest, as of late, due to the increased need for low-noise signal amplification in resonant micro/nanosystems. While these devices, which are traditionally designed to operate in a linear range, potentially represent an elegant, on-chip amplification solution, it is not readily apparent that this technical appro...
متن کاملParametric resonance in tunable superconducting cavities
We develop a theory of parametric resonance in tunable superconducting cavities. The nonlinearity introduced by the superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) attached to the cavity and damping due to connection of the cavity to a transmission line are taken into consideration. We study in detail the nonlinear classical dynamics of the cavity field below and above the parametric thresh...
